Doesn’t’ Time Fly
I cannot quite believe that close to a year has passed since I last posted and the poor old Guide to Gay Gardening has been left untouched!! I must rectify this situation and lets hope that I can continue this blog more productively this year!
Of course, much allotment work has been done but as with wonderful mother nature things continue to flourish, grow and constantly change. Last weekend I finally got a chance to get down to the allotment to move the Tayberry that was randomly shoved in last year but not in the correct position.
Starting the heave out of the earth from where the old compost had been on the peripheral of our site Mary and I soon hit a snag….the bottom of the compost had been paved over so our simply task of digging a whole and moving a plant was quickly thrown into much harder work.
But our intrigue was aroused….we pulled up the revealed paving slab to reveal a carpet tile. We pulled up the carpet tile to reveal a clinical waste bag. we pulled up the clinical waste bag with some trepidation, especially due to our neighbouring allotment owner announcing that a body had been found on the Hackney allotments! heaving more and more earth out of the way to reveal more and more slabs, bags, carpet tiles it was with slight mystery that we started to wonder just what was down here…..either it was completely innocent or someone had taken precautions to try and stop people from digging down. Half an hour of digging an out came a sack of shredded office papers along with more clinical waste bags and then to our horror a large, rolled tarpaulin at the bottom!!
Of course, upon unfolding the tarp there was nothing inside and we reached bare earth underneath. I dug the earth over as a precaution but no bones appeared so it seems that Mary and I have come off unscathed….the last thing we needed was for our allotment to turn into a crime investigation site!!
