The Leprechaun Would be Proud!
We stood in the makeshift shop surrounded by all types of goodies. The metal sides and roof of the buidling shed rusty green paint flakes into the soft breeze and inside our footsteps echoed on the solid floor. The recycled metal shipping crate was stacked floor to ceiling with tools, seeds, tubers – all the materials that make us gardening types go wild. At the entrance stood piles and piles of newly, freshly delivered potatoes. It was with appparent ease that Mary & I quickly started to pile sack upon sack of spuds into our arms, some early 1sts – Foremost, a bag of second early’s – Desiree, our main crop of King Edwards and a small sack of red onion’s. Grappling with our laden arms we added another bag – Charlotte’s this time – for good measure. It was obviously apparent to all those but ourselves that we were potato novices. We had enough to feed a small country.
However, it wasn’t until we started planting several months later that we realised this for ourselves. We had left planting a little later, the Charlotte’s should have been in the ground a few weeks ago but due to frost and general life complications we just hadn’t found the time. It was Saturday afternoon, it was hot and I was finally down at the allotement. It dawned upon us relatively quickly that though we both had good intentions for planting the actual knowledge of what to do wasn’t known. With a fleeting look of dismay we hastened to find someone with the adequate knowledge – no one was around! What to do! How do we plant our potatoes?! In the distance a dark haired, willowy women was busily digging, her couple of dogs hopping around at her feet. Brief introductions were less than fruitful, like us, Lisa was a novice! What to do now! But luck was in store, our new found friend had a book, a book with exact specifications on how to plant and harvest and do practically anything one might want to do with potatoes! We were soone at work with our new found knowledge. The potatoes were to be planted in trenches 24inches apart. Within the trenches themselves the tubers were planted at a 5inch depth, separated by 12inches each to allow ample growth. They were then covered and the surronding earth heaped up on top to form a pyramid type affair – I supposed to help absorb as much warmth as possible.
It became blatently apparent very quickly that we had FAR too many potatoes to plant! Each row took approximately 7 potatoes and each bag probably contained enough potatoes for 6/7 rows! Oops! It was agreed that we would do three rows each of the Foremost and Charlotte potatoes leaving the rest of the bed free for our main crop. The soil was particularly good in this area so we were keen to keep a number of varieties in the best conditions possible. In addition we placed a row of Charlotte’s in the bed towards the lawn – here the soil is much thicker and has more organic waster in it, however it is also in the shade of the surrounding forest, it will be interesting to see how the crops differ.
