Summer Gardening
I’m couched in front of Wimbledon having just eaten sausage sandwiches and fresh strawberry’s picked from my front garden. The backdoor is ajar, the chooks picking through the undergrowth grabbing juicy morsels and cracking snails as the discover them amongst the foliage. Meanwhile the gentle hum of bumblebee’s and the light sprinkling of the solar fountain fills my ears. Mano is lying against the wall, flicking his tail as the sun heats up his feline fur and there’s a sea of beautiful colour the length of my little 10m x4m London garden.
At the allotment the years hard graft is finally coming into fruition as the first harvests start to show. Long summer evenings allow trips for the green fingered late into the night, the summer sun setting over distant Canary Wharf as we potter back and forth to the watering station weighed down with watering cans like milk maids. Salad crops are burgeoning with life providing ample meals of fresh crisp greens. Fat hairy Broad Bean pods are almost ready to snap from the stem whislt a gentle thinning of the carrot rows are providing tiny perfect veg to instantly nibble for full organic flavour. Summer Pudding Alley is fulfilling its true nature with strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries, and currents all clinging to their stems as the hot summer days swell and engorge them until their ripe for cream.

Living a gardeners life isn’t for everyone. You never quite know where the next penny’s coming from and the winter months can be quiet, cold and lonely. But its the summer months where such a life shows its benefits, where the hard work at my clients throws their gardens into radiant life, where a morning spent in blissful sun can filled with mowing and watering and deadheading before slumbering, like my cats, and watching the tennis. And as we take to our gardens to enjoy the heat, to relax, to socialise, to barbeque, its the perfect opportunity to remind ourselves just why our horticulturally hard work is needed and the stunning results that can be achieved.
