The Bumblebee Parade
With bee’s of particular ecological importance I have become accustomed over the past few years of mentally noting bee’s wherever I see them. Summer wouldn’t ever be the same without them. The gentle buzzing drone of bumblebee’s as they bounce heavily through the air looking for nectar is common place as the summer sun shines down. They add a crucial and peaceful layer of sound to the already man-made air pollution that surrounds us.
We’ve all heard of the devastating way in which honey bee’s are quickly vanishing off the face of the planet through disease, climate change and other measures that we simply cannot fathom. But the awful truth is that bumblebee’s are also being affected and whilst my London garden may be humming a happy tune a recent trip to Helmingham Hall in Suffolk highlighted the depth of concern behind the disappearances. Here, in the middle of the country, with fields of meadows and carefully managed wildflower patches there was nothing, not a bee in sight, a devastating blow for the conservation of bee’s.
It is therefore with some relief that I’m glad to see such a throng of black and yellow bristly bee’s flying around East London. And whilst the conservationist in me is keen to keep the British species going, the human in me is also selfishly protecting my future, for without bee’s the sustainability of the country’s food is all but gone. And whilst honey bee’s may be the mainstay pollinator of almost everything we eat, other bee’s including the humble bumble and mason bee’s are also incredible helpful in passing pollen from plant to plant.
We can all do out part to help, either providing homes for bees or by gardening in such a way that we attempt to provide bee’s with a source of pollen throughout the year. And whilst I can count the number of honey bee’s I’ve seen this year on one hand, our little bumblebee friend, her furry coat of yellow and black vibrating with pleasure as she hurries back and forth, is in urgent need of a little help too.
