Three autumnal jobs to keep you busy
So, it’s almost September, the nights are creeping in and there’s a distinct chill in that early morning air. Yes, WINTER is COMING. But, before we get to that crisp season, there’s the joy of autumn, of changing leaves and vivid coloured trees. Of misty mornings and spiderwebs covered in dew drops. Of bright rudbekia and dainty Japanese anenomes filling the garden with that last flush of petalled colour.
I’m a fan of autumn. Many people see the waning summer as the time to bring in the garden furniture and close up shop until the spring months arrive. Not so! There’s so much to see, do and enjoy in the garden during the autumn that it’s well worth investing some time and effort in any outdoor space at this time.
Sedums last long into autumn
Planting
Plants are not just for spring and summer, and there’s a huge amount of planting you can do for autumn and winter. Not only is the autumn an ideal time to plant shrubs, bare rooted plants and bulbs, but there are some great plants that will flower through these months too. Sedums, verbena, rudbekia and echinacea and Japanese anemones all flower well into the cooler months of the year. You can also leave the seedheads on these plants, providing food for birds and interesting winter structure. It’s also perfect timing to get some winter specimens, such as helebores and winter pansies planted up so you’ll have some colour throughout the bleaker months of the year.
Lighting
Just because the nights are drawing in, doesn’t mean you can’t extend your season with some well placed lighting. I used to be a little bit scared of electrical stuff outside, but the huge variety of solar lights now make artificial illumination an absolute breeze. Whether you want to light up a path with small solars, or make a statement about one particular plant, there’s an ideal lighting option to use. Wildlife
Alot of garden wildlife need help at all times of the year, but particularly during autumn when they’re preparing to try and survive the winter. There are all manner of things you can do to help, including leaving those seedheads on as I previously mentioned. Also, if you want to help the birds, then it’s a good idea to start feeding during October and November. This ensures that they know where to come during the winter months, rather than expending precious energy searching for your bird table. In addition, autumn is a month of hibernation for many creatures, and you can put hedgehog or amphibian boxes into secluded areas of your garden. It’s also a good idea to turn compost heaps earlier in the season to avoid disturbing sleeping creatures later on. Finally, if you want to plan for the bees, planting some muscari, English lavender or rockcress will ensure there’s an early supply of nectar when they first appear in the spring.
