Seedlings and Spring
I love all the seasons. Their distinct differences and the changes that each one brings is a reason for living solely in itself. Summer provides vivid blue skies above meadows of flowering grasses wafting gently in the breeze. The first autumn cold snap turns vivid greens to hues of russet, amber, and rust. And as winter approaches, plants which have lain dormant all year suddenly become more apparent, their vibrant stems or vivid foliage becoming apparent against the pristine snow blanket that covers the country. However, it is spring that I truly enjoy. Every time you step outside your door something new has appeared, has flowered, has pushed up soft young shoots. And it is this season that you can sowing and germinating, one of the most exciting times in the year.
Bergenia Bursts into Flower
I always start sowing far too early. The first slightly warm day when I banish socks to the bedroom and pad around my house barefoot stirs that green fingered soul, and I find myself scattering seeds in pots with no recollection of how I got there. The dibber is in hand, the packets open and rustling, and out of nowhere every windowsill in the house is covered with seed trays and the bursting of new green life. This year I have utilised my small heated propagator in an attempt to get my seedlings off to a better start. Every year I never seem to get cosmos creation quite right, resulting in thin leggy specimens which, whilst thriving, need significant staking. This year is no different – they’re on a south facing windowsill, the propagator is at 16°c, yet still their delicate stalks rush upwards. I need to crack this germinating lark otherwise I’ll run out of bamboo canes and pea sticks before I know it.
I Need Help with My Cosmos
I also have the stupid habit of sowing seeds and forgetting what I’ve planted. My lavender’s were attacked by a cunning slug who managed to squirm its way into the propagator by route of a pot which had been left outside. Now banished, six seedlings are pushing their way through. The cosmos are ever tall, as are the cornflowers set to bring some annual love to the borders. Echinacea is yet to sprout, and though I’m fairly certain that the new leaves appearing in one seed tray are those of delphiniums I can’t be sure that they’re not something else I eagerly scattered. Meanwhile, cuttings are finally starting to root as the windowsill’s heat up, and now brought in from it’s winter retreat, the sarracenia is starting to uncurl carnivorous new white trumpets. And whilst rain continues to fall from the heavens, the season’s-a-changing, and with warmer weather peeping her nose in now and then, my favourite time of year is on the brink of arriving.
